Non-Core Curriculum
Encore
Non-Core subjects include every subject that is outside of science, social studies, English and math. The school offers exploratories that allow students to dig deeper into subjects that interest them. We have STEAM programs such as Engineering(robotics), Math, Dance, Chorus, and Greek Literature. We also provide band, cooking, language, art, and computer classes. Students are required to have PE or Weight Training every day for thirty minutes. Every year, the entire student body is sent a survey to see what classes parents and students believe the students need to succeed or would like to participate in. Although the students have a choice of their exploratories, we do require students to have Physical fitness and Health every day. At the first of the year, students are given themes to try out which they would like for that semester. Themes are a collective of exploratory classes that students can take instead of having to choose every class individually. Using themes allows students to have classes they are interested while learning new things outside of their normal comfort zone. The students who are in a classical band can choose their theme, but their band period will take the first period every day. The first period and second period are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday. The third and fourth period is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. On Friday, we allow the students a day to present a product from their exploration. For instance, the dance exploratory may perform on Friday or the cooking exploratory wants to present what they make. If there is no event on Friday, the teachers collaborate classes together to decide whether to have students participate in a volunteer event or have a “fun” crash course on a subject that is interdisciplinary and students enjoy. Encore allows students to learn important instruction that is outside of the core subjects. Students need to have a variety of knowledge that can help them find their own interests as well as find connections to the core curriculum within other encore subjects. The use of Friday is meant to show the progress of an Encore class and to display material the students in the class found relevant to share with students who may not have the class. Themes are grouped by countries or cultures that are primarily seen today. We have different cultures incorporated so that students can appreciate cultures around the world that are unique and different from our own. In each theme, we require a computer class and a life skills type of class.
