Curriculum Overview

Advisory

8:00-8:25

Our middle school will take 25 minutes every school day to provide students with an advisory period. This block of time will provide teachers with the opportunity to keep their cohort informed through announcements and paperwork and to take up an attendance of students for the day. This time will also be used for teachers to provide students with activities that focus on their physical, social, emotional, moral, cultural, and cognitive/intellectual development. The ways in which these developmental components will be reached varies by the advisory teacher. However, in the past, it is common for advisories to include one-on-one discussions to ensure a student has an adult they are able to bond with. With that, advisories also have included creative developmental activities, mini-lessons, guest speakers, and service learnings (i.e. fundraisers).

Core

Varies depending on grade level

Our core classes consist of the subjects of math, social studies, English language arts, and science. As highlighted in our “team organizations” section, our core time is split up in to teams to ensure that students are getting personalized and bridged experiences within their core subject courses. This allows students to become familiar with their teacher teams, which makes for a more comfortable flow of instruction. With this, students are also given more flexibility in their schedule, which allows for more opportunities in the classroom. With a flexible schedule created with teaming, student core classes allow for an enriching learning experience.

Encore

Varies depending on grade level

Encore classes will be chosen by students based on their interest. All encore classes will provide students with developmentally responsive curriculum that both interests and allows for creative outlets for students. Encore classes may include art, physical education, band, chorus, foreign languages and film. Our list is ever growing and often based on the interests of our students.
